UP’s Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary designated Ramsar site
New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI) The Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh has been designated as a Ramsar site, taking India's total to 99 and the state's tally to 12.
Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an environmental treaty established in 1971.
Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav made the announcement on Wednesday through a post on X.
"Uttar Pradesh takes the score to 99! Delighted to announce the designation of Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary (Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh) as a Ramsar site. This announcement brings a boost for local livelihoods and global biodiversity, along with water and climate security," said Yadav.
The minister also highlighted the ecological importance of Shekha Jheel, saying it is a vital habitat for migratory birds such as the bar-headed goose, painted stork and various ducks during winter.
The Ramsar Convention is one of the first modern treaties between nations for conserving natural resources.
It aims to stop the loss of wetlands globally and to conserve them through wise use and management.
