Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President and MLC B Mahesh Kumar Goud has said that the outcome of discussions in the Lok Sabha on the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill marks a “victory for democracy and the Constitution.”

He claimed that the Congress party successfully countered what he described as an attempt by the BJP to introduce delimitation-related provisions through the bill in an unconstitutional manner. According to him, the opposition stance helped prevent what he termed a political strategy aimed at increasing parliamentary seats in northern states for electoral advantage.

Mahesh Kumar Goud alleged that the BJP attempted to delay the implementation of women’s reservation until 2029 by linking it with delimitation, but said this move was thwarted. He also reiterated Congress’s demand for a nationwide caste census prior to any constitutional amendments. He noted that the Congress had already supported the 2023 legislation providing 33% reservation for women in legislatures and accused the BJP of failing to implement it despite its passage. He further alleged that this reflects an anti-women approach by the ruling party.

Highlighting the Congress party’s legacy, he said it has consistently worked for women’s empowerment, including providing India with its first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He concluded that the BJP’s attempt to link women’s reservation with delimitation without wider consultation had failed, and reaffirmed that Congress would continue to press for immediate implementation of women’s reservation.
