The systems are brittle when faced with adaptive, non-ideal users. India is simply the first place this is visible at scale.

It gets used quickly, casually, and often without a second thought. That is precisely where the problem lies.

AI shows up inside a search bar, a WhatsApp chat, a voice note transcribed mid-commute. It doesn't announce itself or demand to be learned.

For decades, Indians have navigated imperfect systems by bending them. You skip a step. You find someone who knows someone. You improvise until the thing more or less works. This is not carelessness but is a form of intelligence.

It is a survival grammar developed across generations of systems that were never quite designed for the people using them. The bureaucratic queue that moves only if you know the clerk. The form that demands six documents when four will do. The workaround that becomes, over time, the way. In Hindi, we call it Jugaad.

But artificial intelligence is not a system you can adjust around. It is a system that adjusts around you. When a culture of chalta hai meets a technology that speaks with the confidence of a subject matter expert, small habits don't stay small but scale enormously.

India's digital life has always run on adaptation. Devices are shared between family members. Instructions are half-followed. Decisions are outsourced informally to the neighbour, the local pharmacist, the cousin who studied engineering.

Over time, adaptation hardens into assumption that systems are flexible, that outputs are approximate, that precision is for people with the luxury of time.

AI is dramatically different. It produces fluent answers regardless of the quality of the question. It fills gaps without flagging them. It removes the visible signs of uncertainty that would ordinarily prompt a second opinion. So the user stops questioning. The answer sounds right. That becomes enough.

The real faultline is not accuracy. It is the collision between two forces. First, systems that speak with confidence. Second, users who engage with casualness. One overstates. The other under-checks.

In a Mumbai local, a young man dictates into his phone in a mix of Hindi and English – "kal se chest mein halka pain hai, serious hai kya?" He listens to the reply, nods and forwards it to a family group without comment. No one asks where it came from. The answer is formatted, confident. That is enough. A loosely framed health query becomes a WhatsApp forward and by evening carries more authority than the neighbourhood doctor.

A student submits an AI-written assignment they cannot explain, but it passes because it sounds complete. A small trader receives pricing advice stripped of local context and still acts on it because the paragraph looked considered. Nothing dramatic appears to go wrong. That, precisely, is the problem. Chalta hai has always been most dangerous when it is invisible.

What makes this distinctly Indian is hardly the behaviour itself since casual AI use is a global condition, but the scale at which it operates and the thinness of the institutional buffers. In environments where verification culture is strong, where accountability runs through visible systems, AI's confident fluency is moderated by habit and process. In India, those buffers are uneven.

Authority gets inferred from form rather than tested through process. A chatbot that sounds like a doctor begins, gradually, to replace one. An answer that looks complete begins to end inquiry. Fluency becomes a substitute for truth not because anyone decided it would, but because the path of least resistance runs that way.

There is also the matter of accountability or, rather its absence. When AI influences a consequential decision, responsibility becomes diffuse in a way that is qualitatively new. The user assumes the system knows. The system produces probabilities, not guarantees. The platform points to scale and terms of service. Nobody fully owns the outcome. In India, this is not abstract philosophy.

When an AI-generated health suggestion is wrong, the correction is not recorded anywhere, it is absorbed silently by the person who followed it. When financial advice misfires, the loss is personal and invisible. When misinformation spreads faster because it is better written, responsibility dissolves into the network. These are accumulations.

None of this argues for slowing adoption. That is neither realistic nor, at the scale India needs technology to work, desirable. But it does require an honest reckoning with design assumptions. Most AI interfaces are built for an idealised user, one who is literate in the relevant language, querying individually, applying critical distance to outputs. India does not have that user at scale.

It has real ones those who are adaptive, improvisational, multilingual, often using shared devices, often operating under time and cognitive pressure. Designing for anything else is self-deception dressed as product strategy. If interfaces don't introduce meaningful friction at points of genuine consequence – health, finance, legal – the system will simply learn to reward what users already bring to it . It will prefer speed over scrutiny, fluency over fidelity.

Chalta hai worked when errors were visible, local, and reversible. A wrong turn could be retraced. A bad piece of advice could be ignored next time. AI removes all three conditions simultaneously. Errors are now embedded rather than obvious, processes are opaque rather than inspectable, and consequences travel faster than corrections. The instinct remains. The system does not.

India will not struggle to adopt artificial intelligence. That battle is already over. What it will struggle with is what it brings to the encounter basically, the accumulated habits, assumptions, and shortcuts of a civilisation that learned to make do.

The risk is not that AI will fail India. It is that AI will learn from India, reflect its instincts back at scale, and in doing so, make chalta hai not just a cultural reflex but an infrastructure principle.

What looks like an Indian behavioural quirk is, in fact, a systems stress test. When users are multilingual, time-poor, operating on shared devices, and making decisions in real-world consequence environments, AI overstates, fills gaps and removes signals of doubt.

If systems cannot signal uncertainty, introduce friction where stakes are high and adapt to non ideal querying behaviour, then what appears here as 'chalta hai at scale' will surface everywhere else, just more slowly and less visibly.
