Tehran is flexing its muscle again. On April 18 2026 Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboats fired warning shots at Indian-flagged vessels including the massive oil tanker Sanmar Herald as it tried to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ships had received clearance yet IRGC patrol boats approached without warning blasted shots and forced them to turn back. No injuries reported but the message was clear Iran is reimposing strict control over the narrow chokepoint that carries a huge share of the world’s oil.
India wasted no time summoning Iran’s ambassador in New Delhi to register a strong protest.
This is not some minor scuffle. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical lifeline for global energy. Iran sits right on it and uses fast gunboats and asymmetric tactics to harass traffic whenever it suits them regardless of who claims the biggest navy on paper.
India ranks its fleet among the world’s top five yet geography gives Tehran the home-field edge here. Paper strength means little when bullets fly in confined waters.
The regime in Iran blames the US for the latest closure citing broken trust and ongoing blockades. Meanwhile merchant ships get caught in the crossfire and energy markets face fresh risk.
Strong nations protect their trade routes and their people. India did the right thing by protesting fast. The world should take note Iran keeps proving it will bully anyone who gets in its way even supposed partners.
