The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced the formation of the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body aimed at shaping India’s approach to artificial intelligence governance. The group is designed to act as the central mechanism for coordinating policy, aligning ministries, and addressing the broader economic effects of AI adoption.
What the AIGEG will do
The AIGEG has been created to implement recommendations from India’s AI governance guidelines and the Economic Survey. Its primary role is to ensure a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to AI policy. This includes aligning ministries, regulators, and advisory bodies under a unified national framework.
The body will also focus on balancing AI deployment with economic realities, particularly the impact on employment and social stability. By bringing together stakeholders across technology, security, and economic domains, the group aims to streamline decision-making and reduce fragmentation in policy implementation.
Leadership and structure
The group will be chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw, who currently handles portfolios including Electronics and IT, Railways, and Information and Broadcasting. Jitin Prasada will serve as Vice Chairperson.
The AIGEG will function as the apex body within India’s AI governance framework. It will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), which will provide inputs on global trends, emerging risks, regulatory needs, and technological developments.
Focus on responsible AI and economic impact
A key objective of the AIGEG is to promote responsible AI innovation while addressing concerns related to workforce disruption. The Economic Survey had highlighted the need for a dedicated authority to manage the intersection of AI adoption and labour market dynamics.
By institutionalising coordination at the highest level, the government aims to ensure that AI growth remains aligned with national priorities, including economic stability and inclusive development.
The government has also released detailed documentation outlining the composition and terms of reference for the AIGEG. The body is expected to begin work on shaping policies that will guide AI deployment across sectors while addressing long-term economic and regulatory challenges.
