Bengaluru : Even before peak summer has fully set in, a severe heatwave has begun sweeping across Karnataka, with temperatures rising sharply in several regions, including Bengaluru. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the situation could worsen over the next two days, urging people to take precautions against extreme heat conditions.

Coastal districts and parts of Kalyana Karnataka are already reeling under intense heat, with temperatures expected to touch as high as 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Health experts have advised the public to avoid stepping out between 10 am and 5 pm unless absolutely necessary and to stay well hydrated.

The coastal belt is witnessing a sharp rise in temperature, with Uttara Kannada recording around 37 degrees Celsius, which could climb further to 42 degrees. Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have also reported higher-than-normal temperatures. Interestingly, the weather department has indicated chances of light rainfall in some coastal areas, though it may not significantly reduce the heat.

In north interior Karnataka, districts such as Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Bidar, and Bagalkot have been placed under heatwave alert. Dry weather conditions are expected to prevail across large parts of the region, intensifying discomfort for residents.

Authorities have issued advisories urging people to take preventive steps to avoid heat-related illnesses. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours, especially between 12 pm and 4 pm, when the sun’s intensity is highest.

Doctors recommend frequent intake of water and fluids such as tender coconut water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices to prevent dehydration. Wearing light-coloured, loose cotton clothing is also suggested to help the body cope with heat. People venturing outdoors are advised to use umbrellas, hats, or scarves for protection.

Experts have also cautioned against excessive consumption of caffeinated and sugary drinks, as they can lead to dehydration. Parents have been asked to ensure that children avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during summer holidays.

Meanwhile, dry weather is likely to continue in districts such as Belagavi, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Koppal, Ballari, Raichur, Yadgir, and Vijayanagara. In contrast, parts of south interior Karnataka — including Shivamogga, Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru — may witness light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas.

With temperatures expected to rise further, officials have stressed the importance of awareness and preparedness to minimise the risks associated with heatwave conditions across the state.
