Hyderabad: Telangana BJP state unit president N Ramachander Rao has condemned the Congress party’s opposition to the landmark Women’s Reservation Bill, calling it a “black day” for women’s empowerment in the country.

In a statement on Friday, Rao said, “From a humble background, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tirelessly worked to become the Prime Minister and has envisioned empowering ordinary women and give them a voice in the legislature. It is a gross injustice that the Congress has voted against this historic bill, preventing common women from entering the halls of power.”

Rao criticised the Congress party’s dynastic politics, stating, “The Congress, from Indira Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and earlier Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi, has always believed that only their family should rule and only women from their family should get into the legislature. By blocking this bill, they have once again shown their true colours.”

He accused Congress leaders of being out of touch with the aspirations of ordinary women and urged voters to “chase away Congress leaders and ban them from power and not to vote in future.”

Rao also took aim at Rahul Gandhi, noting, “Rahul Gandhi says there are no reservations for Muslim women, for the reason to oppose the historic bill. This exposes their hypocrisy.”

The BJP, Rao said, strongly condemned the Congress and the INDIA alliance for preventing the passage of the bill and warned that they would face consequences at the ballot box. “Women across the country should punish the Congress for committing this injustice,” he declared.
