India braces for extreme heat, Health Ministry asks states to activate stroke units – The Tribune

In the light of the Meteorological Department's prediction of heatwave conditions in large part of the country, the Health Ministry has directed the states to ensure operationalisation of dedicated heat stroke management units at all health facilities and adequate preparedness of ambulance services.

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava has also issued directions to the states to strengthen fire safety at the healthcare facilities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal heatwave days are expected from April to June across parts of East, Central and North-West India and the South-East Peninsula, with many coastal areas of Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh.

"Strengthening preparedness, enhancing compliance with fire safety norms, and promoting a culture of vigilance remain essential to safeguarding patients, healthcare workers, and infrastructure," the letter by the health secretary said.

The Health Ministry, in coordination with the Directorate General Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, will be observing nationwide Fire Safety Week 2026 from May 4 to 10.
