The biopic of Michael Jackson is off to a tremendous start after its opening weekend. The film, starring Jaafar Jackson, grossed $97 million in North America, according to a report by Forbes. Grossing another $120.4 million, the film's cumulative worldwide business now stands at $217 million. The film hit theatres worldwide on Friday with paid previews in some markets on Thursday evening. According to makers, Michael grossed over $13 million from paid previews.

The film has become this year's second biggest opener, surpassing Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary, which made its debut at $80.5 million. However, it failed to surpass The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which had opening of $131.7 million earlier this month.
Michael has also set a new benchmark for biopics. It witnessed the biggest opening weekend in the musical genre, beating the earlier record set by Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million, 2015), as reported by Forbes. Moreover, the film has registered highest-ever opening among all biopics, outperforming Oppenheimer, which had opened to $131.7 million in 2023.
While the oversea collection for Michael is impressive, it has performed fairly well in India too, a country where the pop sensation amassed huge popularity. According to trade tracking portal Sacnilk, the film grossed Rs 5.35 crore on Sunday (Day 2), witnessing a slight jump from its Saturday collection of Rs 5.10 crore. The film had opened at Rs 3.80 crore om Friday. It also raked in Rs 1.70 crore from paid previews, taking its overall India net collection to Rs 15.85 crore and gross to Rs 18.91 crore so far.
The much-anticipated biopic of Michael Jackson has most received mixed to negative reviews from audience and critics alike. However, the box office earmings reflect a positive response from viewers with an impressive 97% rating from over 5,000 verified users on Rotten Tomatoes.
