Global leaders condemn White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, back Trump

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several top officials were inside the Washington Hilton at the White House Correspondents' Dinner when shots were fired Saturday night.

Authorities say the suspect was quickly taken into custody, and a Secret Service agent who was struck is expected to recover.

In the hours after the shooting, leaders from across the globe issued statements condemning the violence and expressing support for the United States.

Several heads of state took to social media to send messages directly to President Trump and the First Lady.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote that he was "deeply concerned" by the incident and said his thoughts were with those affected.

"Any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It is a huge relief that @POTUS, the First Lady and all those attending are safe."

French President Emmanuel Macron called the shooting "unacceptable," adding that violence has no place in democratic societies.

"Violence has no place in a democracy. I extend my full support to Donald Trump."

Leaders from allied nations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East echoed similar messages, condemning the attack and expressing relief that the president and other officials were safe.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was "shocked by the attempted assassination of President Trump."

"We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and strong. We send our wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the wounded police officer and salute the US Secret Service for their swift and decisive action."

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said that he was "relieved" to hear that Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were safe after the shooting.

"I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being. Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned."

President of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen posted to X after speaking with President Trump, saying she expressed her solidarity with him and Melania Trump following the attack

"We underlined that political violence has no place in our democracies."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote on social media that he was "shocked by the attack."

"I am shocked by the attack on the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Relieved that President Trump, the First Lady and all the guests are safe and sound. This was an attack on our free and open societies. We stand for democracy and in solidarity with the United States."

Authorities have identified the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner as a 31-year-old man from Southern California.

Investigators say the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner may have been targeting members of the Trump administration and is believed to have planned the attack, according to new details from the White House.

Officials say the suspect wrote a manifesto that stated he intended to target members of the Trump administration. The document was reportedly sent to family members shortly before the incident.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
