Trump Calls India ‘Great’, Modi ‘Good Friend’ After ‘Hellhole’ Row
Christopher Elms, spokesperson for the US Embassy in New Delhi, said the President considers India a "great country" and shares a good personal relationship with its leadership.
A controversy erupted after US President Donald Trump shared a social media post containing derogatory remarks about India and other countries, prompting American officials to step in and clarify his stance.
The row began after Trump reposted content from a podcast by American commentator Michael Savage, in which India, China and other nations were described in offensive terms. The remarks quickly drew criticism and raised concerns in diplomatic circles.
Amid the backlash, US officials attempted to control the damage, emphasising that Trump holds India in high regard. Christopher Elms, spokesperson for the US Embassy in New Delhi, said the President considers India a "great country" and shares a good personal relationship with its leadership.
"India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top," Trump said.
The controversial podcast also included comments on birthright citizenship in the United States, with Savage making claims about immigrants from Asian countries. Trump shared parts of the podcast while criticising existing citizenship laws.
Earlier this week, Trump had also stated in an interview that the United States is the only country offering birthright citizenship, a claim that has been disputed by experts. Several countries, including Canada and Mexico, provide citizenship based on place of birth.
In India, the Ministry of External Affairs responded cautiously to the controversy. Official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government is aware of the reports but did not offer further comment.
