Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir today alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government is attempting to push delimitation ahead of the 2029 elections by using the women reservation issue for political mileage.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Kohima, Jamir, who is also president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), said that the opposition and INDIA Bloc has demanded a clear commitment to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill by 2029.

He said that the BJP led government were trying to pass the delimitation, because they know that without taking the advantage of women’s reservation, delimitation is not possible. “So to achieve their goal, they have to sacrifice the women’s reservation. They know that two-third majority, they are not in a position to get it. But still then, they brought in and it was voted out,” Jamir said.

He said INDIA Bloc has clearly mentioned in the House that, “if Modi government is serious enough, they should bring the Women’s Reservation Bill with a condition that it has to be implemented by 2029.”

“By 2029 parliamentary elections, the women reservation should be effective, and they should bring a special bill, so that the women reservations should be preserved and it should be dignified and honoured,” Jamir reiterated.

Countering BJP Mahila Morcha’s press conference in Kohima on April 20, Jamir said, “They are saying that Congress and the INDIA bloc are not honouring the women reservations. But it is quite contrary, that they are the ones who are not willing to implement this women reservation. Instead, they are using the women reservation for their political mileage.”

Emphasising on the need to take delimitation matter seriously, he said, “Instead of politicizing among the parties in the state, we also have to come together and see that it has implemented. If we can do it now, it will be the advantage for our generation.”

He appealed all the parties, especially to the BJP, “that it should not be politicized but think for our state, and work out rationally.”

NPCC Working President Apok Jamir accused the BJP-led central government of lacking sincerity in implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill, saying the April 2026 notification for the legislation, passed in 2023 with unanimous support, exposes the ruling party’s “qualified intent.”

“That shows that there is no sincerity in the present government for implementing the bill altogether,” Jamir said.

Questioning the timing of a special Parliament session convened during the electioneering period, Jamir alleged it amounted to a violation of the Model Code of Conduct and the Chief Election Commissioner should have taken action.

Taking exception to Prime Minister’s social media post seeking public forgiveness over the bill while blaming the Congress and its allies, Jamir said the move was politically motivated. “The women folks of the country are not fools. I believe that his move is more towards taking an advantage in the West Bengal elections,” he said.

NPCC Working President Khriedi Theünuo said the BJP had “politically miscalculated” the issues of women’s reservation and delimitation, asserting that implementation required a sequential approach beginning with an updated population census.

“We have to see that in order to fulfill all this, there should be an updated population census, following which delimitation can be effectively carried out, and only after that the reservation can be enforced,” Theünuo said.

He alleged the BJP was pushing the delimitation issue with an eye on the 2029 general elections while simultaneously advancing the women’s reservation bill ahead of assembly polls in West Bengal, where women’s participation is a significant electoral force with no BJP government in power.

Theünuo stressed that the matter required wider consultation and broader consensus-building before any move toward implementation.

“These are things which technically we have to take into consideration. It cannot be taken randomly,” he said.
