Kolaiseval OTT release puts a haunting Tamil psychological thriller within easy reach of viewers outside India, and it is not an easy watch.
Written and directed by debutant VR Thudhivaanan, Kolaiseval follows Kaali and his heavily pregnant wife Anusuya as they leave Tiruvannamalai for a hilltop shrine to fulfil a 200-year-old prenatal ritual.
Their pilgrimage, rooted in family tradition, slowly slips into nightmare as the couple finds themselves in a remote forest where old customs conceal brutal impulses.
The film is now streaming exclusively on Sun NXT, but only for audiences outside India, after its theatrical run that began on 13 March 2026.
Sun NXT is offering the title in Tamil with high-resolution streaming and support for premium formats like 4K and Dolby, underscoring how regional thrillers are being packaged for a global audience.
Kolaiseval stars Kalaiyarasan as Kaali and Deepa Balu as Anusuya, with Bala Saravanan, Gajaraj, Aadhav Chandra, Vijay Sathya and Akaran Venkat in supporting roles, under the RP Films banner backed by producers R.P. Bala and Kousalya Bala.
Cinematographer P.G. Muthiah frames the forest and the shrine as spaces where faith and fear collide, while Santhan’s music pushes the story from gentle domestic scenes into outright dread.
On the surface, the plot is built around a family ritual, yet the film spends much of its time confronting honour killing, patriarchal control and the violence that communities can justify in the name of tradition.
Public reception in cinemas has been mixed, with an IMDb user score of 5.3 out of 10, but early responses on social media and from regional reviewers describe it as a “socially conscious thriller” that aims to disturb rather than comfort.
The Kolaiseval OTT release ensures that a long-delayed, low-key Tamil film about ritual and violence now has a second life beyond the box office.
It may not appeal to everyone, but for viewers interested in psychological thrillers that question how far honour and belief can be pushed before they become deadly, Kolaiseval on Sun NXT is a timely, unsettling choice.
